The Bharatiya Janata Party said that the State Government will present a strong advocacy in Uttarakhand High Court regarding the petition filed against the Uniform Civil Code (UCC). The State media in-charge of BJP, Manveer Singh Chauhan stated that the government respects the judiciary and will respond accordingly.

He said that those opposing women’s rights or creating obstacles should not have any misconceptions, as the UCC from Uttarakhand will move forward towards a uniform legal system across the country. During a media interaction at the party headquarters, Chauhan said that the government has followed all judicial processes and will file its response soon. He said that the UCC was drafted through a constitutional process involving consultations with experts and the public under the leadership of a Supreme Court judge.

He stated that inputs were taken from various social, political and regional representatives and after nearly three years of deliberation, legal and executive experts reviewed the draft before it was discussed in the State assembly. He said that the implementation of the UCC is now benefiting the people of the State. Responding to the opposition’s reaction to the petition, he criticised those opposing the UCC, saying that their stance was expected.

He said that the same people had historically prevented the implementation of the UCC in the country and introduced laws such as the Muslim Personal Law and Waqf Board Act while imposing the Hindu Code Bill. He said that the UCC introduced in Uttarakhand will continue its course, ensuring legal uniformity across the country.
