The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh conferred 19 teachers with the prestigious Shailesh Matiyani State Educational Awards for the year 2025 in a ceremony held at Lok Bhavan on the occasion of Teachers’ Day on Saturday.
Extending his greetings, the governor said that a teacher is not just a professional but the one who guides generations and shapes the nation’s future.
He added that a teacher not only imparts knowledge to students but also instils values, recognizes their talents and guides them in the right direction in life.
“A teacher’s true success is when children from ordinary families rise to become national icons and claim that their teacher gave them the confidence to dream and fulfil their dreams. Recognizing a student’s hidden potential, instilling self-confidence and giving them the courage to move forward is a teacher’s most important contribution,’’ he said.
Terming Shailesh Matiyani as a sensitive storyteller who gave a powerful voice to the lives, struggles and emotions of ordinary people in the mountains through his writings, the governor said that the award presented in his name, honours the dedication, struggle, sensitivity and responsibility of teachers to society.He said that school should be a place where children come with enthusiasm, not fear and where asking questions is not considered a weakness, but the beginning of learning. Every child should have equal opportunities to advance.
The governor asked teachers to teach students the art of living alongside subject knowledge, values alongside knowledge, sensitivity alongside success and the spirit of nation above everything.
Education minister Dhan Singh Rawat said that selecting 19 candidates from about 70,000 teachers for the award was a challenging task. He congratulated all the selected teachers, saying that this honour is a testament to their outstanding work and dedication to education.
Additional secretary to Governor Reena Joshi, additional secretary Namami Bansal, director general Education Akanksha Konde and others attended the ceremony.

Secondary Education: Narendra Singh Negi (Pauri), Suman Dhyani Sharma (Chamoli), Atul Kumar Srivastava (Dehradun), Kamlesh Panwar (Haridwar), Naveen Chandra Pant (Champawat), Vishan Singh Mehta (Nainital) district) and Subodh Singh Bisht (teachers training institute Uttarkashi).
