Governor, Lieutenant General (retd) Gurmit Singh virtually interacted with the youth of Uttarakhand in an event organised by the Doon University on National Youth Day on Wednesday. The governor discussed various issues and the views of the youth regarding nation building. The students also asked the governor questions on various issues.
Responding to student Hansika Parashar’s question on the role of youth in nation building, Singh said that if students start thinking about nation building and the betterment of society from school level, then it is a great achievement in itself. “The youth should always follow the mantra of nation first. I myself have walked this path all my life. Swami Vivekananda also considered service to the nation as the biggest religion,” he said.
Responding to another student Vigani who asked why most youth today want to settle and work abroad, the governor stressed on the need to create such an environment in the country and states that motivates most of the youth to stay in the country. Jobs and facilities like abroad will have to be developed here. Reverse migration in Uttarakhand should be our topmost priority. It is ironic that today, when the talented youth of India earn a name abroad then we realise how talented our youth are, he said.
Replying to Vipasa on ways to stop migration from border districts Singh said that developments like road connectivity, tourism development, home stay, gharat, solar energy and horticulture would prove to be game changers in the strategically important border districts of the state. But local participation, especially the participation of youth, will be of utmost importance in reverse migration efforts, said the governor. Responding to Sankalp, the governor said that youth are the strength, present and future of the nation. “To preserve the ancient culture, traditions and thoughts of India and bring it in front of the whole world is our duty. Our Indianness is our DNA. Indians have to contribute to the progress of the country by following the path of harmony,” he stressed.
While paying tribute to Swami Vivekananda he said that he is hero of the youth even today. Vivekananda wanted to help the needy people of India and the youth should also give priority to service and humanity in everything they do, said Singh.
Doon University vice chancellor Surekha Dangwal and others were also present on the occasion.
