PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE /Dehradun

A head constable posted at Dehradun airport died under suspicious circumstances after suffering gunshot wounds from his own service carbine at his home in Nagagher area of Ranipokhari on Monday night, police officials said. The deceased was identified as Sunil Kumar, who was posted in the Dehradun police line and was currently on guard duty at the airport.

Superintendent of police (Rural) Jaya Baluni said that the police are investigating the matter from all angles. It is being reported that 11 rounds were fired one after another from Kumar’s carbine and he sustained three bullet injuries.

According to the police, Kumar came home after his family informed him that his wife was unwell. His son told police that he reached home around 9:15 PM and was knocking on the door. He reportedly fell while removing his shoes in the courtyard and his family heard gunshots. When his wife, son and daughter came outside, they found him bleeding on the ground. The family took him to the Himalayan hospital where doctors declared him dead.

Questions are being raised about how 11 rounds were fired from Kumar’s carbine while he was allegedly removing his shoes. Police are also investigating this angle as part of the case.

After receiving information, the Ranipokhari police reached the spot and informed senior officers. The Forensic Science Laboratory (FSL) team also visited the scene and carried out photography, videography and other investigations. The body was later sent for postmortem examination.
