Himalayan Black Bear enclosure opens at Doon Zoo

The Forest minister, Subodh Uniyal inaugurated the Himalayan Black Bear enclosure at Dehradun Zoo on Wednesday following clearance from the Central Zoo Authority. Speaking at the event, he stated that the Himalayan Black Bear enclosure had been constructed within the 20-hectare safari area of Dehradun Zoo. “The tiger enclosure was opened for visitors last year, resulting in an increase of about 150,000 visitors. Following the opening of the bear enclosure at Dehradun Zoo, tourists will now be able to view bears, along with other wildlife, in Dehradun city, leading to a further increase in visitors’ footfall,” he added.

The principal secretary, Forests, R K Sudhanshu informed that the black bear enclosure currently houses one male bear rescued by the Forest department on April 29, 2025, from a village under Kanasar Range of the Chakrata Forest Division and brought to Dehradun Zoo on May 1, 2025.  “The bear is approximately two years old,” he added.

The principal chief conservator of forests, Ranjan Kumar Mishra informed that there are plans to bring white tigers and striped hyenas to the safari area of Dehradun Zoo.
