Members of various Hindu organisations have objected to reopening of meat shops during the holy Shravan month in Uttarkashi city. Vishwa Hindu Parishad and Bajrang Dal members demonstrated at the collectorate and met the district magistrate Prashant Arya on Monday.
They submitted a memorandum demanding that permission should not be granted to reopen meat shops in the Panchkosi and municipality area. They stated that applications by various vendors to sell meat were rejected by the sub divisional magistrate earlier this month.
The Hindu bodies are demanding that this prohibition should be permanent. They said that the Bhatwadi area is a centre of religious faith where the majority of the people are vegetarians. Meat shops in this area hurt religious sentiments and also affect communal harmony, they averred.
Kashi Vishwanath Mandir Mahant Ajay Puri also submitted a memorandum against permitting the opening of meat shops during the Shravan month.
