Homestays included in best tourism village contest: Minister

The union ministry of tourism has added rural homestays in the competition of selecting best tourism villages this year. The tourism minister Satpal Maharaj said that the tourism village competition is an innovative step in promoting rural tourism in the country. The scheme started last year also includes promotion and development of homestays this year. Under the best homestay category cluster, responsible behaviour, vibrant village, green, community based homestays, units led by women, homestays based on culture and heritage, farm stay, cottages, Ayurveda and others will be included.

The minister said that the homestays can apply under tourism village contest under the themes of heritage, agriculture tourism, responsible tourism, vibrant village, adventure tourism, community based tourism and welfare.

 Maharaj said that last year the Sirmoli village in Munsyari Pithoragarh was awarded as the best tourism village and exuded confidence that this year also Uttarakhand will win accolades.

 The villages and homestays can apply on the website www.ruraltourism.gov.in till January 31.
