The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) issued 373 challans under a special enforcement drive against banned single-use plastic carry bags between February 1 and 20.
Assistant municipal commissioner Rajveer Singh Chauhan said that the Rs 1,23,950 was collected in fines during the 20 days.

Deputy municipal commissioner Tanvir Marwah said that inspection teams have been deployed in busy markets, commercial hubs and roadside shops to ensure compliance with the State’s plastic ban. “Challans are being issued on the spot wherever banned plastic carry bags are found in use or distribution,” he said.

Officials said that despite repeated awareness campaigns, prohibited plastic bags continue to be used in several parts of the city. Plastic waste contributes to clogged drains and increases the risk of waterlogging, particularly in low-lying areas during the monsoon season. The drive will continue with intensified monitoring in high-footfall zones. Traders and residents have been urged to shift to cloth or paper bags as alternatives.
