The police sealed the Indo-Nepal border in Uttarakhand on Tuesday and closed cross-border movement for people till 6 PM on April 19 ahead of polling in the Lok Sabha elections. Besides this, the police have also deployed about 40,000 police personnel and paramilitary forces for security arrangements across the State, the additional director general of police (Crime, Law and Order) and the State police nodal officer for the election, AP Anshuman said. He said that the Centre has sent 65 companies of Central Armed Police Forces (CAPF) which have been deployed across the State as per the requirement. However, the police had sought 115 CAPF companies to ensure proper security arrangements during elections. Besides this, the Centre has also sent 14,300 home guards from neighbouring states for security arrangements. The ADG said that about 20,000 police personnel of the State have also been deployed to ensure security, law and order during the elections. He said that the police have also deployed sufficient forces on 809 vulnerable booths and 1,365 critical booths. The category of vulnerable booths includes those booths in which some incidents have taken place during elections in the past that disrupted the election process. The critical booths include those that experienced less than 10 per cent voting in the past elections. Besides this, those booths that witnessed more than 90 per cent of voting out of which more than 75 per cent voting was in favour of a single candidate also fall under critical booths. The police have made all arrangements in such booths as per the guidelines of the Election Commission of India, Anshuman said. Besides this, he added that the police are continuously conducting intensive checking campaigns at about 93 checkposts while ensuring proper surveillance through drones in many sensitive areas.
