PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Jyotirmath

With the Jyotirmath -Auli ropeway- touted as Asia’s longest ropeway- remaining suspended, a joint team constituted by the State government conducted a thorough inspection of the ropeway on Wednesday. The team included top officials from the State Tourism department; Bridge, Ropeway, Tunnel and Other Infrastructure Development Corporation of Uttarakhand Ltd (BRIDCUL); Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam (GMVN) and the Tehsil administration. During the inspection, the team took a field review from Tower no 1 in Jyotirmath to Tower no 10 in Auli. The officials had not only closely examined the technical condition of both the stations, but also inspected the cracks caused by land subsidence around the ropeway route, sources privy to the details said.

The ropeway was closed for safety reasons in the aftermath of the Jyotirmath land subsidence in January 2023 which has been severely impacting the tourism business here.

The State government had formed the team following persistent demands from local residents and those associated with tourism trade to restore the ropeway at the earliest. The team’s report will now be submitted to the State government, based on which a decision will be taken regarding the future of this rope track.
