The Municipal Corporation of Haridwar (MCH) has been facing a significant increase in garbage generation since the Kanwad Yatra began on July 22. The city normally produces about 220 metric tonnes of garbage daily. However, with the influx of Kanwadias, an additional 80 to 100 metric tonnes of waste is being generated each day, the sanitation inspector in MCH Shrikant Chaudhary said. He told The Pioneer that the volume of waste spikes drastically during such religious events from 80 metric tonnes to 100 metric tonnes. Since the number of Kanwadias is expected to increase from Monday, the garbage generation is likely to rise further. This situation demands urgent and effective waste management strategies to avoid an environmental crisis. Chaudhary said that the MCH has made suitable arrangements to ensure proper disposal of all the garbage efficiently. “We have deployed an additional 1,000 sanitation workers to ensure proper cleanliness in ghats and public places. The city has also been divided into seven zones with sanitation inspectors assigned to each for effective management. Sanitation workers are deployed on duty round the clock in three shifts across the Kanwad Mela area, parking zones and other locations,” Chaudhary said. He also added that the MCH will update arrangements if required next week.
