The State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR) chairwoman Geeta Khanna has sought a detailed report from the officials concerned regarding the death of a student at a private school in Mussoorie.
Khanna said that the commission has taken immediate cognisance of student’s death on Monday. She has directed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Dehradun to form a medical team to investigate the circumstances surrounding the child’s drowning, as well as the first aid and other facilities that were provided afterward. The evaluation will also include the availability of oxygen in the hospital and the deployment of security personnel and lifeguards, along with their ability to provide first aid, life support and CPR, she said.
She further added that the Dehradun senior superintendent of police along with the district magistrate, CMO and Chief Education Officer (CEO) of Dehradun, have been instructed to investigate the entire matter and submit a comprehensive report. Khanna recalled that last year, a student from a school in Haldwani had drowned in a park in Bareilly. Following that incident, the commission wrote a letter to the government, informing the Education and Tourism departments that it should be mandatory for at least 30 per cent of the staff at all adventure sports venues and schools to have CPR training. This requirement is aimed at ensuring that, in the event of an accident, staff can provide immediate assistance instead of merely panicking, she said.
