Magh Mela: THDC releasing additional water for holy dip in Ganga

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ New Tehri

During Magh Mela, devotees will get plenty of water for holy dip in the river from Devprayag to Prayagraj region. THDCIL has made all preparations to release additional water for the mela as per the requirement of the UP Irrigation department. “Tehri Lake has enough water to fill all the Ganga ghats from Devprayag to Haridwar during the mela. The dam administration has made complete preparations for water discharge,” said CGM, THDC, Amarnath Tripathi.

Thousands of saints and devotees gather in the auspicious month of Magh to take a holy dip in Ganga, given the mythological belief that bathing in Ganga in Magh cleanses a person of sins and helps him get salvation.

Magh Mela will continue until Mahashivratri slated on February 15. Several major bathing festivals and religious events will be held in this period.

But, during winter, water levels of rivers decrease due to scanty rainfall and snowfall in the higher Himalayan regions.
To avoid a water shortage on the Ganga Ghats during the mela period, Uttar Pradesh Irrigation Department had requested THDCIL to release 180 cusecs of water daily which was promptly accepted by THDCIL.
