INTERVIEW
ARUN KASHYAP/Haridwar
Preparations for the Ardh Kumbh Mela to be held in Haridwar in 2027 are now entering a decisive phase. Having completed most of the major works related to major bridges, roads and other permanent infrastructure, the Mela administration’s focus is now on temporary arrangements, crowd management, traffic, cleanliness and security. In an exclusive interaction with The Pioneer, Mela Officer Sonika said that the administration’s priority for a massive event like the Kumbh Mela is to provide devotees with a safe, smooth and organised journey.
Sonika stated that many major construction projects for the Kumbh including several bridges and roads are nearly complete. Temporary arrangements are now being finalised in the areas where tent settlements are to be developed. Work related to land leveling, lighting, drinking water, sanitation and other basic amenities will be completed in a timely manner. She said that the biggest challenges during large religious events are cleanliness and smooth traffic management. Maintaining law and order is also an important responsibility. Keeping this in mind, the fair administration is coordinating with various departments and preparing a detailed action plan.
According to Sonika, upto 20 crore devotees are expected to arrive in Haridwar during the Ardh Kumbh Mela, which lasts about 90 to 100 days. The Mela administration will strive to ensure that, despite such a large crowd, pilgrims do not face unnecessary traffic jams, chaos, or inconvenience. She said that the traffic plan is being developed taking into account the capacity of the ghats, parking spaces, bus stands and major traffic routes. Routes and diversion arrangements will be developed by assessing the impact of crowds from different locations on each area.
The Mela Officer stated that the control room will be given a key role in overseeing various arrangements during the Kumbh. Emphasis will be placed on integrated monitoring of information related to traffic, crowds, security and other arrangements. New technology and artificial intelligence (AI) will also be utilised this time. A system is being developed to receive alerts through the technical system if a large crowd suddenly gathers in any area or if traffic pressure increases on any route.
Based on this, the fair administration and related agencies will be able to take necessary immediate action. Sonika said that Kumbh is not merely an administrative event, but a grand festival involving the faith of saints, Akhadas and devotees. Therefore, constant communication is being maintained with all Akhadas and religious leaders. Their suggestions and guidance will be incorporated into the arrangements for the event. A clean, safe and organised Kumbh Mela is the administration’s top priority. Considering the participation of the younger generation, efforts are underway to create an environment that provides a better experience for both pilgrims and local citizens and youth, she said.
Ganga cleanliness and sewage management have also been given a significant importance in the preparations for the Kumbh. At the Central and State levels, Ganga conservation and cleanliness efforts are being integrated with Kumbh preparations. At the government level, infrastructure, sanitation and river conservation have also been identified as key areas for the upcoming Kumbh. She further said that special arrangements are being made for crowd control, entry-exit, security and disaster management in 32 sectors. To prevent stampedes, plans are being made to maintain orderly crowd movement and control routes if necessary. Priority will also be given to facilities for women and devotees with disabilities. Emphasis will be placed on ensuring adequate space and easy access for them in public facilities and other arrangements within the fair area.
Sonika said that the success of a massive event like the Kumbh Mela will be determined not just by construction work, but by better coordination, timely implementation, use of technology and constant monitoring on the ground. The Mela administration is striving to ensure that every department fulfills its responsibility and ensures a safe and smooth Kumbh Mela experience for devotees.
