In latest news from Uttarakhand, the Kumaun University Teachers Association (KUTA) has taken strong exceptions to the State higher education department’s order of compulsory retirement of its employees, including teachers, at 50 years. KUTA’s president Prof Lalit Tiwari and general secretary Vijay Kumar said that the order is not just unfortunate but scary. As per the order, professors and employees of the department who have crossed 50 years would be selected through a screening committee and would be compulsorily retired.
Expressing anguish, they said that the order is all the more fearsome as the average age for appointment here is higher than in other departments. This is because, they said, it takes them years to acquire degrees and meanwhile they reach 35 years and then they apply for jobs. Some professors complete their higher studies when they are 40 years or more. “And to make them retire at 50 years is not just impractical but might dent into the educational standards,” said Tiwari, adding that in teaching profession, seniority is and should be valued.
