Torrential rains since late Monday night disrupted normal life in Niti-Malari Valley under Jyotirmath block of Chamoli district. As heavy showers continued, heavy chunks of debris fell and blocked a stretch of Malari Road connecting Jyotirmath with the remote Niti Valley near Tamak Gadi bridge, disrupting traffic in the area.
Upon receiving the information about the road closure, Border Roads Organisation (BRO) personnel arrived at the scene and began clearing the debris.
A local, Laxman Singh Butola said that the Tamak area had experienced heavy rainfall on Monday, causing the Tamak rivulet to overflow.
“However, after the water level in the drain receded, the situation returned to normal, the road was repaired and the vehicular traffic resumed. But the highway was blocked once again on Tuesday in Tamak area following heavy landslides. BRO personnel have been working on a war footing to remove debris and reopen the road,” he added.
With landslides often posing challenges during rains in border areas like the Niti-Malari Valley, the locals urged the administration and departments concerned to maintain special vigilance at vulnerable locations and restore road access quickly.
Meanwhile, the administration urged residents to avoid unnecessary travel during inclement weather and to monitor road conditions before undertaking their journeys to avoid any untoward incidents.
