The Haldwani city Congress committee on Tuesday torched the BJP-led Central government in its effigy at Buddha Park while staging a stir against what they alleged police lathi-charge on students and youth during a protest held in Delhi on Monday.

Addressing the gathering, the city Congress president, Govind Singh Bisht accused the Centre of ignoring the demands of students and suppressing their peaceful protests.

Several other district Congress leaders addressed the people gathered there and slammed the Centre for ignoring the students’ demands for reforms in the education system, transparency in recruitment and an impartial probe into the alleged use of force against the protesters.

Reiterating their support for the agitating students and youth, they said that their party would continue to raise issues related to education, employment and democratic rights.
