Lead agency Team inspects accident site in Chamba

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ New Tehri

In compliance with the directives of the Supreme Court committee on road safety, a lead agency team conducted a site inspection of the accident site near Chamba on Friday.  Notably, while returning from the funeral of a near relative, eight people had died on the spot in the accident on Thursday.

After the investigation, several important suggestions were made regarding the road. The inspection revealed that although the road at the accident site was adequately wide and had parapets installed, there was a consistent slope. Prima facie, it appears that the consistent slope prevented the driver from controlling the vehicle’s speed, leading to the accident.

The inspection team, led by the deputy transport commissioner, Uttarakhand, Shailesh Tiwari, included local officials from Transport, Police and Public Works Departments, as well as experts from JP Research India. The inspection team collected necessary information and inspected the vehicle, which, the team members said, would be analysed to ascertain the causes of the accident and submit a report to the higher authorities.

The PWD officials were instructed to construct rumble strips, install crash barriers and improve the geometry of the road along the steep slope. They were also directed to install speed limit and accident-prone area signage at the site.
