Mercury level inches closer to 40 °C in the plains, rain forecast to provide relief in mountains

Temperatures in the plains of Uttarakhand have reached almost 40 degrees Celsius in some places with no respite in sight in the coming days. The provisional State capital Dehradun is also forecast to suffer from rising temperatures today. However, some of the mountainous regions are expected to witness relief from the heat due to rain and snowfall in the higher reaches on Saturday.
According to meteorologists on Friday, during the past 24 hours, the maximum temperatures remained appreciably above normal in plains and above normal to appreciably above normal in the mountainous regions. No significant change is likely to occur in the maximum temperature during the next 3-4 days in the State.
The State Meteorological Centre has forecast that light to moderate rain / thunderstorms / snowfall (in places at altitudes of 4,400 metres and above) is likely to occur at few places in Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Chamoli, Bageshwar and Pithoragarh districts. Very light to light rain / thunderstorms are likely to occur at isolated places in the remaining mountainous area of the State while dry weather is likely to prevail in the plains. A yellow warning has been issued regarding the possibility of thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds (speed 40-50 kmph) likely to occur at isolated places in Chamoli, Uttarkashi, Rudraprayag, Bageshwar, Pithoragarh, Dehradun, Tehri Garhwal, Almora and Nainital districts today.
The provisional State capital Dehradun is forecast to witness a mainly clear to partly cloudy sky. Very light to light rain/ thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty wind (30-40kmph) is likely to occur in some areas. The maximum and minimum temperatures are likely to be around 39 degrees Celsius and 22 degrees Celsius respectively in Dehradun today.
