One can learn from the Jaunsaris how to remain connected with one’s roots and preserve the culture and heritage. Governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh said this after releasing the book ‘Beyond Polyandry- Changing Profile of an Ethnic Himalayan Tribe’ written by former Indian Coast Guard additional director general Kripa Nautiyal at the Raj Bhawan on Friday. This book encompasses information about the culture and civilisation of the tribals in Jaunsar, their customs, social structure, economy, status of language, specialties of marriage and festivals and socio-cultural changes.
Speaking on the occasion, the governor said that Jaunsaris teach others how to take pride in one’s culture and heritage. “The cultural identity is a vital necessity of any nation or region. We must remain connected with our roots in order to keep our identity alive. There is a need to maintain our tradition and practices for which we need to follow the example set by the Jaunsari community. We should inspire the Amrit Kal generation to connect with its cultural heritage and roots while taking pride in its heritage,” Singh said. He also congratulated the author for bringing out a well researched book.
Sharing his experience on the occasion, Nautiyal said that this book based on detailed research is his gift for the Jaunsar-Bawar region. “As a native of the region, I have attempted to go beyond the polyandry practice and reach the deep layers of the beautiful and changing culture of this region,” he said.
MLA Munna Singh Chauhan, former chief secretary Nrip Singh Napalchyal and head of economics department in Doon University, Rajendra Prasad Mamgain also expressed their views on the occasion.
