A leopard cub was captured in a forest department cage at Kumaud village in Pithoragarh district on Tuesday morning. However, the capture has not relieved the villagers, for, as per the Forest department officials, leopard activity is still being reported in the area. A male leopard and another cub are believed to be moving around the village, prompting the Forest department to set up another cage to capture them.
Earlier, a cage had been installed in the village following repeated leopard sightings. A few days ago, a female leopard was caught in the cage and it was thereafter released into a reserve forest area about 50 kilometres away from the village.
Following this, another cage was placed near a water source in Kumaud village. At around 8:15 AM on Tuesday, a leopard cub was captured.
Speaking of the matter, the forest range officer Dinesh Chandra Joshi said that the cub is estimated to be around 12 to 15 months old. “It will also be released into a reserve forest area,” he added.
The Forest officials further informed that the movement of the male leopard and another cub continues to be monitored, and a cage has been installed to capture them as well.
