In an incident that triggered concerns among the villagers, a leopard sneaked into the goat pen and killed 14 goats. The incident happened late in the night at Gethiya Sanatorium near Nainital.
Prakash Chandra, a resident of Gethiya, supports his family by rearing goats. When he went to feed the goats in the morning, he was shocked having found all his goats dead. He further said that while 12 goats were found dead inside the enclosure, the rest two had been dragged away by the leopard. “With all the goats dead, I do not know how we will carry on,” he said.
Queried over the incident, the range officer of Nainital Forest Division, Nitin Pant said that upon receiving the information, the forest inspector Rajendra Karayat and beat officer Hira Giri had gone to the spot and investigated. “Necessary action will be taken after we receive the report. The man who lost all his goats might be compensated as per the rules,” he added.
