Leopards preying on livestock: villagers gherao range officer

In latest Uttarakhand news, the people living in village Aarukhan and others in the neighbourhood adjacent to Beluwakhan gram sabha under Bhimtal block of Nainital district have been living on the edge as the leopards keep prowling and preying on the livestock they are rearing as a principal source of earning livelihood and other wild animals keep feasting on their farm crops. Alleging that the forest department is doing nothing to save them from the wild life menace, the agitated villagers gheraoed the range officer Mukul Sharma. The demanded the forest department to immediately set up cages in the villages to have the leopards captured. They warned the forest department that if the leopards are not captured soon, they would launch an aggressive agitation. Earlier, a large number of villagers reached the range office and staged gherao stir. They alleged that while the government has been rolling out schemes to double the income of the farmers they are being robbed of their only sources of income. They further said that not just their livestock and crops but their lives are under threat with the wild animals frequently straying into their villages. The range officer Mukul Sharma listened to their grievances and assured them of prompt steps to mitigate their hardships.
