Photobiomodulation (PBM), a light-based therapy, might help in pain management, tissue healing and rehabilitation, said biomedical researcher Dr Praveen R Arany at Luxmi Dental Laser and Implant Centre near Rispana in Dehradun on Monday.
In a media interaction on PBM, Dr Arany, who is visiting India as a Fulbright-Nehru senior scholar supported by the United States-India Educational Foundation (USIEF), spoke about the growing use of the therapy in healthcare.
He further said that PBM uses controlled doses of light to influence biological processes in the body. “Researchers are studying its possible role in reducing pain and inflammation and supporting wound and tissue healing. The therapy may also be useful in recovery after injuries, surgeries and dental procedures,” he stated, adding that PBM needs to be used carefully because factors such as wavelength, power, dose and treatment duration could affect its results.
He also spoke about the possible use of PBM in supportive cancer care. He clarified that the therapy is not a replacement for cancer treatment. “Instead, it may help manage some treatment-related problems and help patients tolerate necessary treatment when supported by scientific evidence,” he said.
Dr Arany has a background in dentistry, oral pathology and biomedical research. He has completed a joint PhD-residency programme at Harvard University and has conducted research at Harvard Medical School and the US National Institutes of Health. He has more than 150 scientific publications to his credit.
Experts, who were present at the programme, said that more research, standardised treatment methods and clear clinical guidelines are needed before PBM can become a wider part of mainstream healthcare.
