Even though the prohibited use of loudspeakers had reduced in parts of the State, the blatant violation of the law and resulting noise pollution still continues in various urban and rural areas. The police on Sunday removed loudspeakers from some religious sites in the Pathri area of Haridwar district while also warning the public against the use of such equipment. Acting to implement the directions of the Supreme Court the police and local administration removed loudspeakers from a Shani Mandir and a mosque in the Dhanpura village of Pathri. These systems were being used to play bhajans and azan at loud volumes from these structures. Officials said that the police had allowed the use of only one loudspeaker and that too at the low permissible decibel level. The volume should be high enough to be heard on campus but the noise should not be heard outside the campus. The Ferupur police post in-charge Sudhanshu Kaushik and the Tehsildar Priyanka reached the Dhanpura village where they got the loudspeakers removed from the temple and mosque on complaints of noise pollution. They stressed that the rules regarding noise pollution from religious sites will be implemented strictly with stern action likely if the same violation is repeated in the future. The officials informed the villages about the directions of the apex court regarding noise pollution during religious activities. Appealing to the public to maintain communal harmony, they stressed that the action is not aimed at only one community but is aimed at ensuring that the rules are not violated.
