Nearly 4,000 Dehradun residents compost their wet organic garbage on their premises. The city’s population is about 16 lakh and even if 20 per cent of the citizens start composting in their homes regularly, the garbage disposal issue can be resolved easily. The mayor Sunil Uniyal ‘Gama’ stated this in the launch of the ‘Story of My Compost’ campaign of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) on Friday under Swachchh Survekshan 2023 (SS23) to promote the practice of segregation and composting of garbage among citizens.
Under this campaign, the corporation has invited residents to share their stories of how they dispose of their garbage at source through composting. Locals with credible composting stories would be rewarded besides getting a chance to feature in the corporation’s Wall of Composting. The campaign will last till March following which MCD teams will felicitate registered candidates after checking the credibility of their composting story. The mayor said that all wards of Dehradun generate about 400 metric tonnes of garbage every day and 60 per cent of it is wet organic waste which is mainly generated from homes and commercial establishments like hotels and restaurants.
This wet organic waste can be disposed of at the source quite easily if the locals adopt the practice of segregation and composting. He also felicitated some locals who have been disposing of their waste through composting. To participate in the campaign, locals can share their stories on social media platforms by posting a selfie or a video with the compost they have made and must tag MCD’s page.
