Mayor warns against sanitation negligence as garbage piles up across Doon

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

Taking a serious note of the garbage remaining unattended at several points across the city with the sanitation workers being engaged in making arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations, the mayor, Municipal Corporation Dehradun, Saurabh Thapliyal said that they would not tolerate any kind of negligence in the sanitation workers’ primary duty of keeping the city clean.

A large quantity of mixed waste was found dumped along the roadside, with garbage spilling onto the roads near residential and commercial areas. Similar scenes were seen near Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital, the court area, Prince Chowk, Subhash Road and Darshan Lal Chowk. The situation was particularly noticeable during the afternoon hours.

Notably, the mayor, while chairing a review meeting of MCD’s health section, directed all chief sanitation inspectors (CSIs) and sanitation inspectors (SIs) to ensure regular monitoring of cleanliness in their respective areas. He also warned the officials, saying that action would be taken against sanitation inspectors found failing in their duties.

However, on the same day, sanitation workers were seen engaged in making arrangements for the Independence Day celebrations to be held at the Corporation premises on Friday with garbage piling up at several points across the city.

The contrast between the mayor’s strict directions and the ground situation has raised concerns over whether the sanitation staff and supervisory officials are properly prioritising routine cleanliness synching it with special-event preparations.
