The governor lieutenant general (retd) Gurmit Singh has exhorted the universities in the State to develop a strong academic and research ecosystem through mutual cooperation and coordination. He gave the call during a meeting with the vice chancellors of the private universities of the State at Lok Bhawan on Thursday. He said that besides awarding degrees to the students, the universities should ensure that the students are fully prepared for employment, industry, society and nation-building. The governor said that higher educational institutions should advance the education system in accordance with the spirit of the National Education Policy-2020 and prepare students for future challenges.
He said that it is essential to provide a drug-free and positive environment for youth and asked the universities to prioritize the development of moral values, culture, traditions and character development among students. He said that the universities should pay special attention to research, publications and citations, and to focus on commercialization rather than simply filing patents.
The governor asked universities to identify research topics that align with the State’s needs and potential. He asked universities to select research topics that could directly contribute to Uttarakhand’s development.
The VCs of 14 private universities attended the meeting. They informed the VC about their achievements, future plans and challenges. Important suggestions were also made regarding promoting research, developing a patent culture, commercializing patents, industry-academic collaboration, nationally shared research arrangements and increasing coordination among universities.
The legal advisor to the governor Kaushal Kishore Shukla, secretary higher education BVRCC Purushottam and additional secretary to the governor Reena Joshi were present in the meeting.
