MCD approves Rs 6 crore for e-auto rickshaw waste collection plan

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has approved an Rs six crore proposal to strengthen door-to-door waste collection across the city by introducing e-auto rickshaws.

The decision was taken during the recent MCD board meeting where the councillors backed the move, citing ongoing gaps in garbage collection.

Under the plan, e-auto rickshaws will be deployed across all 100 wards to improve coverage, particularly in areas where larger vehicles find it difficult to operate. Councillors said that narrow lanes, congested neighbourhoods and slum pockets often remain inaccessible, leading to irregular waste collection and garbage piling up.

They also pointed out that complaints related to delayed or missed collection are common in such areas. They said that improving door-to-door collection is critical not just for cleanliness but also for preventing open dumping and related health concerns.

They further said in unison that the use of smaller, battery-operated vehicles would help bridge this gap by ensuring last-mile connectivity. Apart from making it easier to collect garbage in tight spaces, the e-auto rickshaws are also expected to reduce operational costs.

They were told that these vehicles would be rolled out in phases.
