MCD collects Rs 1,42,150 as penalty from stray cattle owners this year
By imposing penalty on the owners of more than 100 stray cattle, the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) has collected the revenue of over Rs one lakh this year. At present, there are about 400 stray cattle with MCD out of which around 302 cattle stay in Selaqui situated Gau Sadan and nearly more than 100 cattle stay in Kanji house, informed officials.
Senior veterinary officer of the corporation, Dr DC Tiwari disclosed that most of the cattle found by MCD workers are either weak or sick but the corporation makes sure they get the proper treatment and care. “We have found several cows, bulls and calves that were left by their owners due to cattle’s deteriorating health but with our treatment and care, their health got better. Most of the cattle include male calves and unproductive cows left by locals to roam around on roads. We have also increased our staff to take care of stray cattle. Currently, there are about 18 workers who work in two shifts in Kanji House as well as in Gau Sadan,” said Tiwari. He said that though the corporation is working its best to provide the best care to the stray cattle, people should also be sensitive towards the life of their cattle. Moreover, he informed that since January, MCD has collected the penalty of about Rs 1,42,150 for more than 100 cows from the locals who returned to reclaim their cows.
The officials stated that most of these people are those who leave their productive cattle to roam openly for the whole day so that they do not have to feed them. Such people milk the cows in the evening and the next morning, they again release them on the roads, added officials. Besides this, Tiwari also informed that the corporation is presently selling cow dung to local suppliers for manure but they are also considering to introduce some methods to utilise cow dung on their own in the next few months. He said that the MCD has also collected revenue from the cow dung of stray cattle which is around Rs 77,100 so far.
