MCD councillors demand investigation into alleged misuse of funds

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The councillors of the Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) raised concerns about the funds allocated for development work in various wards in about past two years when the board was not functional. They alleged that the money given to departments such as Irrigation and Public Works Department was not utilised for any visible work and called for an investigation into possible financial irregularities. They raised this issue in the board meeting held on Tuesday.

Councillor Amita Singh stated that after the dissolution of the MCD board about two years ago, large sums were allocated to these departments but no development work was carried out. She demanded an investigation into the matter and strict action against those responsible. Several councillors supported this demand and asked for full details on how the funds were utilised. They also insisted that the departments return any unspent amount to the MCD.

The Dehradun mayor Saurabh Thapliyal responded that if councillors suspect wrongdoing, the corporation will look into the matter. The municipal commissioner Namami Bansal stated that all decisions during this period were made under State administration and assured them that the MCD will review the issue. Besides this, many councillors also alleged financial mismanagement by the EESL company, which was responsible for streetlight installation across the city for the past many years. They claimed that the company misused funds and demanded an investigation. The commissioner clarified that EESL is no longer involved in streetlight installation and maintenance but assured that MCD will examine the matter.

Another issue discussed in the meeting was the demand to set a fixed monetary contribution for eunuchs on occasions such as childbirth and weddings among others. Councillors stated that this issue was also raised three years ago but no decision was taken by the board. They suggested setting a maximum amount of Rs 5,100 to give to eunuchs on the occasions. The mayor stated that it is a sensitive matter and will be discussed further with the parties concerned before taking any decision.
