MCD to hand over wards to Sunlight company after terminating Econ’s contract

PIONEER NEWS SERVICE | Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is considering handing over garbage collection responsibilities of some wards to Sunlight company after terminating its contract with Econ Waste Management. Econ was managing door-to-door waste collection in 26 wards but failed to meet performance expectations, leading to its removal, according to Dehradun municipal commissioner Namami Bansal.

Bansal stated that despite repeated notices, Econ showed consistent negligence in operations and failed to make improvements. The company did not regularly operate door to door garbage collecting vehicles on scheduled routes and failed to pay its employees on time that resulted in frequent strikes. An investigation by the district administration and the municipal corporation also revealed multiple irregularities, confirming the complaints received over time.

She said that further violations came to light when the company was reportedly found dumping garbage in the Rispana river belt that forced the corporation to take serious action against them. Bansal informed that the MCD had originally given the contract to Econ through a formal tender process. Given the findings, the corporation not only terminated the contract but also recommended that the company be blacklisted. The commissioner said that to ensure continued waste management services, the MCD is now planning to assign select wards to Sunlight Company temporarily while it works on a long-term solution.
