MCD to launch monkey-catching drive in the city

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) will launch a monkey-catching drive across various wards of the provisional State capital following repeated public complaints about the rising monkey-human conflict. The drive is slated to be launched in March after Holi.

The decision was taken after a formal order issued by senior municipal veterinary officer Dr Varun Aggrwal.  A contractor has been selected through a tender process to carry out the operation. All sanitation inspectors and supervisors have been directed to extend full cooperation to the designated teams and coordinate closely with the contractor to ensure smooth implementation of the drive.

To ensure transparency and accountability, officials have been instructed to submit a daily verified written report mentioning the number of monkeys captured. The report must include GPS-tagged photographs and be submitted to the corporation’s Veterinary Section. As per officials, the captured monkeys will be transported to the sterilisation centre at Chidiyapur in Haridwar. After undergoing sterilisation, they will be released into designated forest areas in coordination with the Forest department.
