A woman working as an assistant at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) Rishikesh and living alone was shot dead at her house in Shivajinagar, in Rishikesh late on Saturday night. The police reached the site on being informed about the crime and sent the body for post mortem examination. The woman’s father, Bachchan Singh Rawat, filed a complaint at Rishikesh Kotwali against the accused Suresh Gupta alleging that he had killed his daughter Preeti Rawat. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case under Section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Dehradun senior superintendent of police Ajai Singh said that a special team was formed to arrest the accused. Police are conducting raids at various locations to nab him. According to the police, the woman who had divorced her husband a few years ago was living alone in Rishikesh. During the Covid-19 pandemic she reportedly met Gupta while working at a shop in Rishikesh. Their friendship later turned into an intimate relationship. When this relationship came to light, disputes started in Gupta’s family.

Local persons also made several attempts to resolve the family dispute. However, due to the ongoing love affair between Gupta and Preeti, the family conflict kept increasing. As a result of the dispute, about four months ago, the accused took a mutual-consent divorce from his wife in order to marry Preeti.

Before the marriage, Preeti and her family asked Gupta to acquire property in Rishikesh. Consequently, the accused sold all his ancestral property in Laksar, Haridwar, for Rs 35 lakh and began looking for a house in Rishikesh to live with her.

However, as he could not find a good property within Rs 35 lakh, differences started increasing between the accused and her. Police believe that the accused carried out the crime due to stress. The police said the case is being investigated from all angles and efforts are on to arrest the accused soon.
