Considering the record breaking rise in temperature in Dehradun, the vice chairperson of Mussoorie Dehradun Development Authority (MDDA) Banshidhar Tiwari ordered the officials to ensure a massive plantation drive in the city ahead of the onset of the monsoon to promote greenery. He held a meeting with the horticulture section and engineers regarding the plantation drive on Tuesday. He instructed them to ensure that fruit-bearing trees and trees that will provide shade should be planted on a large scale in parks, roadside areas, empty spaces in schools, river banks, empty lands, industrial areas and in every place wherever possible. He also said that the contractors who will ensure a successful plantation drive should be given the responsibility of maintaining the planted saplings and plants for one year. This step is necessary to ensure that the saplings and small plants thrive and grow properly rather than getting wasted. He asked the officials to ensure enough space around these plants to ensure they grow properly and not die within a few days of the plantation drive. It is an important drive to bring back the greenery of the city and MDDA will not tolerate any negligence in this work, he added.
It is pertinent to mention here that with rising population and corresponding increase in constructions, urban greenery has dwindled alarmingly in Dehradun which was once known for its environment.
