The Tehri MLA, Kishore Upadhyay urged the chief minister Pushkar Singh Dhami to establish the proposed Medical College at Iniyan, New Tehri. Stating this, he said that the proposal is likely to be approved in the upcoming Cabinet meeting. Notably, the people in large numbers had hit the streets in New Tehri on July 31 to oppose the proposal to relocate the upcoming medical college from New Tehri to another place.
Addressing a press conference on Monday, Upadhyay said that he has been vocal for a medical college in Tehri since 1991. “In 2006, I submitted a proposal to the then chief minister, N D Tiwari, seeking the establishment of the institution at Koti Colony. In 2011, I even staged a sit-in inside the State Assembly to press for the demand,” he added.
He further recalled that in 2012, then chief minister Vijay Bahuguna had announced a medical college for New Tehri. “After being elected MLA for the third time in 2022, I put the medical college project at the top of my ten priority development proposals submitted to CM Dhami,” he said.
Buttressing his view, he mentioned that the Union Power Minister Manohar Lal Khattar had approved the construction of the medical college at Iniyan through THDC on July 14, 2024, and the initiative had subsequently been taken forward by Dhami.
Upadhyay stated that all land-related formalities at Iniya have now been completed and the executing agency has already prepared the Detailed Project Report (DPR). “Any attempt to shift the project to another location at this stage will be inappropriate,” he averred.
He added that he had clearly conveyed to the CM that the sentiments of the people of Tehri must be respected.
