For most people, online betting and online games with cash rewards have become a sort of entertainment in their daily life. Due to the 2023 IPL cricket matches there is a major increase in online betting, with many of the players becoming addicted to it, experts said. The online betting first starts as a means of entertainment and later it turns into a sort of addiction.

Speaking on the issue, neuropsychologist Dr Sona Kaushal Gupta said, “Online betting  exerts  a negative impact on the individual’s life. Firstly the person starts with online betting as an enjoyment, but later it becomes an addiction for them. People addicted to online betting soon become dependent on the winning amount rather than earning with hard work. Thus the addicted person will prefer to earn more money without doing hard work”.

She further said that online betting addiction can turn out to be a major issue among the affected people. It will create mental stress and anxiety among the individuals for winning the online betting. Spending time on the phone all the time to see the online betting result will impact the health too. Depression, lack of sleep, disturbance in family, increase of domestic violence, stress are some of the common negative impacts of online betting. Sometimes online betting may also tempt a person to indulge in other bad habits like consuming drugs and alcohol. Online betting addicts even exhibit the greedy personality which turns the person angry and frustrated, she added.
