Operation Crackdown: Police detain 49 for questioning

In a tenant verification drive, police detained 49 people on Thursday. Police said they have been taken into custody after they failed to show valid identity documents. They were taken to the police station by bus. This action was carried out as part of a one-month campaign called Operation Crackdown, launched under the directions of senior superintendent of police, Pramendra Dobal.
The campaign was led by the superintendent of police (SP) City, Pramod Kumar and conducted by a joint team of local police and the Special Operations Group (SOG) in areas under Kotwali Nagar. Police carried out verification in Laxman Chowk, including Gandhi Gram, New Park Road, Gurudwara Road and Malviya Nagar, which are considered mixed population areas.
During the drive, the police verified a total of 469 people living in these areas. As many as 49 persons who could not show valid identity documents were taken into custody and brought to the police station for questioning under relevant legal provisions.
Police also took action against 92 house owners who had not completed tenant verification. They were challaned under the Police Act and fined a total of Rs 9.20 lakh. In addition, 49 people were fined Rs 12,250 under Section 81 of the Police Act for violating rules.
Doon police said that the verification campaign will continue in different parts of the district to keep a check on illegal residents and to maintain law and order.
