Overnight rain, cloudburst wreak havoc in Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar, Tehri

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/ Dehradun

With rain still wreaking havoc across Uttarakhand, Dehradun, Rishikesh, Haridwar and Tehri Garhwal bore the maximum brunt following Monday night’s heavy rain with several swollen rivers and rivulets gushing into fields, houses and temples. Several roads were damaged in Sahastradhara and Maldevta areas of Dehradun.   A number of houses caved in and crumbled.  One of the oldest temples of Dehradun-Tapkeshwar -which is believed to date back to 6,000 years was not spared either. Following overnight rain, the stream called Tamsha-in high spate- swept into the shrine complex, damaging several temples. The water level of the river reportedly reached 30 feet.

The situation in Rishikesh is critical, too with a large stretch of Rishikesh-Badrinath National Highway-7 having been washed away with Chadrabhaga remaining in high spate.

Concerned over things going from bad to worse with unabated rains and cloudbursts, the chief minister visited the affected areas and ordered the administration to reach the people with adequate relief at the earliest.
