PIONEER NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun
In latest news from Doon, the three-tier panchayat elections in Uttarakhand is likely to be completed by the end of May. The State government had earlier planned to conduct the rural polls by the end of April, but the delimitation process was disrupted due to the inclusion of some panchayats under two blocks of Udham Singh Nagar district in the urban local bodies, delaying the holding of the polls. Besides, the process of implementing OBC reservations in the panchayat seats has not yet been completed. Placed in this situation, the State government has decided to extend the tenure of the dedicated commission the proposal of which will be presented in the Cabinet soon.
Notably, the terms of the three-tier panchayats in 12 districts of Uttarakhand, except Haridwar district, ended on November 27 last year following which the State government appointed administrators in these panchayats in December for six months or till the elections were held. Accordingly, the government has time to conduct elections till June. Meanwhile, the preparations have been going on in full swing at the administrative levels.
