Despite the continuous awareness and checking drive being launched by police in Pauri the problem of drug trafficking is continuing in the district. Police, however, say that the peddlers are being nabbed regularly.
The Pauri district police informed that the anti-narcotics task force (ANTF) led by the in-charge of Kotwali Kotdwar and the in-charge of the criminal intelligence unit (CIU) had nabbed a drug peddler identified as Mukesh Chauhan from Motor Nagar under the Kotwali police station of Kotdwar while carrying out a checking drive on Friday. A huge quantity of smack was reportedly seized from him. Later, the police registered a case under Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act (NDPS Act) against the accused. Police further informed that he is a habitual offender having been sent to jail many times under NDPS Act in the past.
Earlier this month, the police had arrested one person from Kotdwar and another from Srinagar on the charges of drug peddling. While one peddler was nabbed with 7.5 grams of smack from Maanpur in Kotdwar another was arrested by the Srinagar police and 2 grams of smack were seized from him from near the Base Hospital. The duo was sent to jail being booked under NDPS Act.
Notably, the senior superintendent of police Pauri Shweta Choubey has given clear instructions to ANTF to continue launching an intensifying drive against drug peddling and book the peddlers under NDPS Act.
