Police and IT department recover 14,800 USD from Bangladeshi citizen

The Police and the Income Tax department recovered foreign currency from a Bangladeshi citizen in a joint operation during the checking campaign conducted in view of the Lok Sabha elections on Wednesday. The accused named Mohammad Rafson was caught with 14,800 US dollars (about Rs 12.38 lakh in Indian currency) at Dehradun airport in Jollygrant during the checking. The officials said that the assistant director of the IT department called Doiwala police station in-charge late on Tuesday and informed him that he had received confidential information regarding a Bangladeshi citizen coming to Dehradun with foreign currency. Acting on the above information, police officials along with the IT department officials started checking at the airport on Wednesday. During the checking, they found a Bangladeshi man Rafson carrying 148 notes of 100 USD each. The officials said that Rafson told during interrogation that he works in a Roman Gift Company and he had come to Dehradun from Saudi Arabia via Delhi and was going to Saharanpur to buy handicraft items on behalf of the company on Wednesday. He claimed that he had brought a total of 15,000 USD but spent 200 USD dollars on buying some other items. The officials said that the accused failed to provide any valid documents regarding the USD recovered from him on the spot. In view of the Model Code of Conduct enforced in the State because of the LS elections, the police seized 14,800 USD for security purposes. The police have sent correspondence to the departments concerned to take further action in the matter.
