The police on Tuesday arrested a man with more than 18 kilogrammes of prohibited turtle meat from Udham Singh Nagar’s Dineshpur area. The officials said that the Dineshpur police station received information from an informer that a person was allegedly selling the prohibited turtle meat near Durga Enclave of the area. They said that a team was sent to the spot and conducted a raid where a man was found to be selling the turtle meat.
The accused has been identified as Sanjay Bain, a resident of the Durgapur area of Dineshpur. The police arrested him and recovered a total of 18.3 kilogrammes of prohibited meat from his possession, according to the officials. They said that the police have registered a case against him under relevant sections of the Wildlife Act at Dineshpur police station and will act accordingly.
The police are also trying to find out how many accomplices the accused had within the district or nearby areas who helped him to carry out such wildlife associated crimes. They claimed that Udham Singh Nagar police have so far arrested 11 smugglers with 374 banned turtle meat in six cases and sent the smugglers to jail this year.
