RBI governor stresses on financial literacy for empowering citizens

Reserve Bank of India governor Sanjay Malhotra underscored the importance of financial literacy in empowering citizens. He emphasised that financial awareness fosters prosperity and long term financial stability. He said this while speaking at a financial literacy camp organised by Centre for Financial Literacy (CFL), Sahaspur, of CRISIL Foundation, for members of self-help groups (SHGs) from Gram Panchayats of Bhopalpani, Badasi and Soda Saroli in Dehradun district on Saturday.
In his address and subsequent interaction with the public, Malhotra also encouraged attendees to make use of various social schemes related to pension and insurance of the Government of India. He exhorted the CFL officials to put more efforts to educate all sections of society, especially those in remote and underserved areas to ensure financial inclusion. The RBI governor urged the participants to spread the financial awareness gained during such camps with their family members, friends and neighbours. According to officials, the camp featured on-site services provided by business correspondents, including basic banking facilities. Counters to exchange coins and notes were also set up at the camp site. A mobile ATM van too was stationed. A few SHGs showcased their products which drew keen interest and appreciation from Malhotra.
