Dehradun police have stepped up night time checking across the district following a recent firing incident. During a late night drive on the weekend, the police questioned more than 500 people and brought 53 suspicious persons to police stations for questioning and verification, officials said.
The superintendent of police (City) Pramod Kumar said that the checking was conducted in both urban and rural areas of Dehradun on the night of August 22-23. He said that the night drive also focused on traffic violations. Police arrested 15 people for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol and seized their vehicles. Another 36 drivers were fined a total of Rs 32,500 for violating traffic rules. Court challans were issued against 46 other drivers, while 23 vehicles were seized for traffic violations.
In a separate action, Clement Town police seized 21 Bullet motorcycles fitted with modified silencers and three vehicles with black window films. The action followed complaints from local residents and senior citizens in the Clement Town area, who alleged that some people, including private university students, were driving rashly and using modified silencers that produced loud sounds, police said. Residents said that the noise was causing problems for children, elderly people and sick persons. Police said most of the seized vehicles were being used by private university students. The university has been informed to take disciplinary action against the students.
