Police to act against unverified and fake social media posts during Kanwad Yatra

Considering how unverified and false information is often spread on social media during the Kanwad Yatra which creates disturbances in maintaining peace and law and order, Haridwar police have issued a strict warning. The Haridwar senior superintendent of police Pramendra Singh Dobal stated that strict legal action will be taken against anyone posting or sharing misleading or provocative content online.

According to him, widely spread misleading posts make it difficult for authorities to ensure smooth coordination during this large-scale religious event. With the Kanwad Yatra set to begin today and continue until July 23 and likely to extend due to the ongoing Shravan month, Haridwar is expected to witness the arrival of millions of Kanwad pilgrims. These devotees collect holy Ganga water from Haridwar and offer it at various Shiva temples across the country.

The SSP said that maintaining law and order remains a top priority for the police during this period. However, the police have noticed that some individuals are deliberately posting content on social media without verifying facts, often in an attempt to gain followers. Such posts can create communal tensions and disrupt social harmony, he said.

The SSP made it clear that any social media post that leads to a breach of peace in Haridwar or its surrounding areas will result in legal action. Not only will the original poster be held accountable but those who share such posts will also face police action and be named in the FIR, he said. The police have urged the public to refrain from spreading unverified content and cooperate in ensuring a peaceful and safe environment during the Kanwad Yatra.
