Colour coding planned for garbage vehicles in Dehradun

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The Municipal Corporation of Dehradun (MCD) is planning to introduce a colour-coding system for garbage collection vehicles to streamline sanitation and door-to-door waste collection in the city. Under the proposed system, vehicles collecting waste from residential and commercial buildings will be identified by different colours.

Dehradun municipal commissioner Alok Kumar Pandey said that the corporation has set a target of achieving 100 per cent door-to-door waste collection from households in the municipal wards. He said that the Health Section has been directed to prepare a proposal for implementing the colour-coding system.

He said that the vehicles operating in municipal wards will be assigned specific colours, enabling officials to identify the category of area for which a vehicle has been deployed. The system is also expected to help the corporation take action if vehicles collect waste outside their designated areas or fail to regularly collect waste from their assigned areas. The MCD currently has around 300 vehicles for door-to-door waste collection. However, these vehicles face difficulties in reaching narrow lanes. To address this issue, the corporation will procure 100 new sanitation rickshaws. The proposal has already been approved by the municipal board.
The introduction of separate vehicles for commercial buildings is also expected to increase the collection of sanitation user charges by the corporation.
