Post-viral weakness cases have increased among people, doctors said. Viral infection cases with symptoms like fever, cold and cough have increased currently, but more often it has been observed that instead of ending in three-four days, the infection is extending for a longer period.
Doctors attributed this to low immunity due to poor lifestyle, which has increased viral infection duration and resulted in post-viral weakness. Healthy diet and fluid intake can help prevent it, they added.

Emergency medical officer at Government Doon Medical College (GDMC) Hospital Dr Amit Arun, said that cases of fever, joint pain and viral infection have increased. About 100 plus such cases are being observed per day in the emergency.

He said that this time viral infection is staying for five to six days, leading to post-viral weakness. Poor lifestyle has caused low immunity, making it difficult for patients to fight infection. To prevent viral infection and post-viral weakness, people should take Vitamin C, intake as much fluid as possible, exercise daily, eat healthy food and maintain a balanced schedule, he said.

Senior physician at Deen Dayal Upadhyay District Hospital, Dr Praveen Panwar reported an increase in cases of post-viral weakness  complications or issues in the outpatient department (OPD) recently. He said that the viral infections, which initially present with symptoms such as fever and other related issues, typically last for two to three days. However, it has been observed that these viral infections are now lasting longer in individuals with low immunity, poor lifestyle choices and inadequate hydration.

Many patients are returning to the OPD suffering from post-viral weakness after suffering from fever 15 days back. They are reporting symptoms such as muscle pain, lethargy and fatigue. Panwar highlighted that these individuals often have pre-existing conditions like diabetes, are alcoholics, or maintain poor lifestyles. These are the ones who are more prone to post-viral weakness.

Additionally, he said the rising prevalence of some chikungunya cases, which can cause joint and muscle pain. To address post-viral weakness, he emphasised the importance of precautions. He prescribed increased water intake to his patients in OPD and similarly advised everyone to stay well-hydrated, as this can help prevent post-viral weakness, including joint pain and other symptoms. Following a healthy diet is also essential for a quicker recovery, he said.
