Transport Dept to act against Vikrams with unblocked front seat

PIONEER EDGE NEWS SERVICE/Dehradun

The operation of the most used public transport vehicle in Dehradun- Vikram- has been riddled with various violations and other issues for years. The Transport department will now start taking action against those Vikram operators in Dehradun who failed to block the front seat next to the driver as per the Uttarakhand High Court order.

The regional transport officer (Administration) of the Dehradun division Sandeep Saini said that the department had directed the Vikram operators to block the seat next to the driver by September 9 after which, the enforcement teams will start checking and take action against them accordingly. The Vikram drivers are often seen carrying more passengers than the capacity of the Vikrams and which is allowed under Motor vehicles rules.

Many drivers often make one to two passengers sit in the front seat next to the driver, leaving not enough space for him that can lead to potential accidents and risks lives of people on the road too. Considering this, the court had issued an order stating that every Vikram operator must block the front seat next to the driver to ensure nobody else can be seated there except the driver.

The RTO informed that the department had given the time to Vikram operators till September 9 to ensure they carry out this step on their own. “Our enforcement teams will start checking from Wednesday and take action including issuing challans and seizure accordingly,” he added.
