As part of the country-wide ‘Vote Bachao- Desh Bachao’ campaign being spearheaded by the All India Congress Committee, Haldwani MLA Sumit Hridayesh launched a scathing attack on the Centre and the Election Commission of India here on Wednesday. “They are eroding the democratic foundation of India by removing arbitrarily and conspiratorially voters’ names from the electoral rolls,” he said and demanded complete transparency in the electoral process.
Training his gun on the Centre and ECI, he said that this is not just a political matter but it concerns the democratic rights of every citizen.
“Congress will continue with its fight to protect the people’s vote. The Election Commission should provide clear, transparent and factual answers to the opposition’s questions about the role of chief election commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and the election process,” he said.
Speaking of the role being played by Rahul Gandhi in protecting the democratic foundation from continuous onslaught, Hridayesh said that Gandhi has been raising the vote theft issue for a long time and his struggle has raised awareness about democracy, the Constitution and voter rights across the country.
He appealed to the Congress workers and the public to check the names of themselves and all eligible members of their families in the voters’ list. “If any discrepancy is found, they should register their objection before the concerned authorities as per the rules,” he added.
